5 Mind-Numbingly Easy Ways to Prepare Your Car for the Impending Michiana Winter

Michiana Winter

As Fall arrives and the leaves change from green to crimson, auto owners begin the process of preparing their cars for the impending cold and bleak Michiana winter. Depending on where you are in the area, you may have to face temperatures well below freezing for several days or weeks at a time. Your car has to be in fairly good condition to survive this crazy weather and the best way to ensure that is by performing the proper maintenance before the cold winter weather hits. Here are five of the easiest and most essential things you can do to gear up:

1. Check the tires and lights.

Michiana winters are known for their heavy ice and snow, the causes of many winter weather accidents (not to mention delays). To stay safe on these slick roads, check your tires and lights. The tire tread should be deep enough to stick a penny in the groove far enough so that Lincoln’s head is covered. You should also check the tire pressure (the proper PSI can usually be found on the tire itself of on the label inside the driver’s side doorjamb).

2. Top off or change out fluids.

Anti-freeze is vital in the Michiana winters to keep the engine from freezing. Test the mix yourself with a home tester or have a certified Michiana mechanic test the amount of water to antifreeze in your system. Adjust or change it as necessary. Get an oil change if needed and top off all other fluids – ice melting wiper fluid is key!

3. Prepare an emergency kit.

Everyone should have a roadside hazard kit – you never know when you’ll be stranded in subzero weather for hours before a tow truck arrives. Your kit should include a flashlight, reflective traffic cones, jumper cables, and first aid items. Michiana residents should also add items like cat litter to help provide traction when stuck in the snow, collapsible shovels, blankets, non-perishable food and drinking water, as well as candles and matches for warmth. A windup cell charger is another helpful item for the kit.

4. Check the battery.

Clean the corrosion off the areas where the car meets the battery post. This will help your battery stay at full power during the winter. If you haven’t already, read up on the process for jumping a car. You never know when you’ll need it. Also, check the batteries in the flashlights and other battery-powered hazard kit items.

5. Take it in for professional work.

The Michiana area is a great place to find mechanics that are knowledgeable of all the auto systems affected by the winter weather. Michiana auto repair shops are thriving businesses in the winter because of the breakdowns that occur from improper maintenance.

Your car doesn’t have to be among those winter casualties, though. Locally owned and operated business like DC Tire and Dick’s Auto Parts, in Michiana, can provide you with a variety of parts and solutions for your customization needs. So go out and get a jump-start on your pre-season prep, it’ll save you from unnecessary expenses and accidents.

Is there anything else you check when prepping your car for winter? Leave your ideas in the comments!

Small Business Banking Solutions in the Midwest

MutualBank

We’d like to take this opportunity to welcome one of our newest clients, MutualBank to the FindItLocal411 community. If you’d like a feature written on your local business, please email us at info@fil411.com.

The credit crunch has left many small businesses in the dust over the past year and a half. Many reports coming out show that funds have been hard to come by whether businesses are seeking startup financing, seed money, construction & development loans, etc. As more of the national banks have tightened their loan policies, it’s important for our local banks to step up. Michiana’s own MutualBank is a great example of a bank looking to help the small business community.

Business Perspective

When looking for your next business loan, it’s important to find a bank with experience and a history of full service offerings. Business lending is a very technical field wherein a history of working with businesses can help owners overcome financial and business obstacles. MutualBank offers a full line of business lending options to provide clients and companies with a complete business perspective.

Here are some services you should look for in your business-lending bank:

  • Lines of Credit – Working capital to properly manage your cash.
  • Equipment Financing – Flexible loan options working with your cash flow to finance equipment, machinery or other capital needs.
  • Commercial Real Estate Loans – Flexibility in interest rate options or terms that provide your business with the necessary capital to expand current locations.
  • Lease Options – Leasing allows business owners to keep pace with the ever-changing technology without straining their everyday cash flow. And depending on your tax adviser, these lease may be fully tax deductible.
  • Construction and Development Loans – These options serve construction companies and those looking to build additions to their current structures.
  • Online Banking – As any small business owner knows, the work never stops. There’s always something more to do, so make sure your business has online banking options.

Small Business Loans

Small businesses are intertwined with their communities unlike the national chains. Money spent at local small businesses stays within the community. It is for this reason that regional or citywide banks like MutualBank specialize in small business financing and loans.

MutualBank counsels clients on the best SBA loan for each individual business. They are also an approved Small Business Association (SBA) Express lender, allowing quick and timely loans.  Community banks like MutualBank help local economies grow and develop by meeting the goals and needs of businesses.

Getting Started

If you are in the Michiana area and looking for more information regarding a small business loan, check out the MutualBank “Getting Started” page. If you are outside the Michigan/Indiana region, make sure to find a hometown bank in your area.  Remember, your small business is the backbone of America’s recovery!

Freelancing: 5 Steps to Get You Started

387599_4664

Freelancing is a great way to turn your skills into cash, without the hangups and headaches of working for a company.  But you should know that the decision alone to become a freelancer will not open doors and bring jobs. It is just a verbal beginning to a job that isn’t for everyone. Most will find out during the establishment process that this type of work isn’t the right fit. That is fine. Others will find that the majority of the work during this phase is unpaid and tedious.

The following steps will help you organize yourself for work as a freelancer. The beauty of freelancing is the flexibility inherent in the process. You can make this move permanent or part-time. Now onto the steps…

Step 1: Gather some Startup Cash

Of course, you will need some cash to set up your website and get out some promo material. However, freelancers also need cash cushion because it will take some time to get that first well paying job. Being unemployed comes in handy here, because the unemployment benefits that’s we’ve been discussing on this blog are the cushion that you’ll need. When you begin receiving payments from work, report to your local unemployment agency to avoid penalties from overdrawing benefits.

Step 2: Set up Headquarters

This could be a corner of living room with a desk and computer… It could also be a bedroom converted into an office. You will need a printer, fax, and a phone. Your computer must have an internet connection that is stable and high speed. Gather up some office supplies like paper, pads, staples, pens, etc. Make sure the area is free from distractions, however, or that the distractions are easily removed.

Step 3: Design and Launch Your Website

A website is essential for freelancers because it is their showroom. It is the place where you showcase what you can do for the client. A good website has information about your business, your skills, and examples of your work. The website is also the best marketing tool for a freelancer because it is cheap and works without much supervision, especially if you work with a template from WordPress for example. However, you must spend time revising and updating to stay ahead of the competition. When obtaining your domain name, choose one that is easy to remember and possibly includes your business name. Don’t make it too long or too obscure.

Step 4: Find Clients

iFreelance

Use your contacts from previous jobs, search the web for job boards like Guru.com, SoloGig.com, iFreelance.com or even Rent-A-Coder. These sites connect freelancers with clients who need the work done. They are also places where you’ll find clients willing to take a chance on a newbie. These job boards require you to bid on a job.

Step 5: Set Your Rates

Do some research to find out what the going rates are. Give yourself faux assignments to build a portfolio as well. Clients like to see what they are paying for—which is your skill. If you have to, do some pro bono jobs in order to build your portfolio and list of references.

Be Patient With the Process

Freelance jobs will not come to you overnight. Unless you have extensive experience in a previous job, you will not bring in the cash that freelance veterans do. However, with a little patience, some marketing and a solid portfolio, you will become part of the vast community of people who are supporting your family from home. Just don’t forget to inform the unemployment office when you get that first check!

All About Business Analysis

business graph
What’s the current state of your company? Sometimes that answer is harder to find than you think.  You may inherently know of your problems, but until you face these issues head on and conduct a business analysis, you may doom yourself to an environment of stasis.

Business analysis incorporates many different factors and can be somewhat difficult; therefore, one must know what they are doing in order to take advantage of such an analysis.

Analysts

Seek out a Business Analyst if you seek someone who can properly perform an analysis.  Like many professionals deemed, “Analysts”, they are trained to use a variety of different methods and to discover and fix the problems that may result and appear as a result of the analysis.  Analysts can provide you and your company valuable and well-documented data on your company as you move forward on many problem-correcting decisions.

Make sure your business analyst covers the following concepts:

  1. PESTLE: This is a technique that is used to perform an external environmental analysis through looking at external factors such as: Political, Economical, Sociological, Technological, Legal and Environmental aspects; hence the name.
  2. MOST: This technique is used to perform an internal environmental analysis through looking at factors such as: Mission, Objectives, Strategies, and Tactics; hence the name.
  3. SWOT: This technique is used to help the business determine and focus on their strengths and weaknesses. SWOT stands for: Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats.
  4. CATWOE: This technique is used to help understand what the business is trying to achieve. It stands for: Customers, Actors, Transformation Process, World View, Owner, and Environmental Restraints.

There are several more techniques that a Business analyst uses in order to provide an accurate business analysis, and if performed properly, problems will be discovered, as well as the solutions for the problems. And, in the end, by using this technique, a business can better increase their bottom line by fixing the problems, even though they might have not known they ever existed without the use of such an analysis.

Memberships Can Save Your Business Money

494499_74504756

Many of you business owners out there will love this money saving tip. You probably have it sitting in your wallet. It’s called a membership card. The one I’m talking about may have been given to you after graduating college or completing the training needed to learn your trade. It is a membership to a professional organization.

Go ahead. Look in your wallet. Snag that Alumni Association card or the Plumber’s Union membership, or even that Women Writers of the Midwest card. Chances are, many of you haven’t looked at these outside the yearly tax deduction taken each year. Don’t worry, that will change today.

It is simple really. That little laminated or paper card is your key to some great benefits. In these economic times, such benefits can help to save your business a great deal of money. They can also introduce you and your business to a new world of like-minded people. Here’s just some of the perks.

Five Ways to Save Using your Organization Discounts

From Alumni Associations to Union and Club memberships, all professional organizations offer its members specials on certain products or with certain vendors. Although these discounts are sometimes viewed as minimal, they can be a godsend when you are having trouble making ends meet. That extra 20 percent off on office supplies comes in handy when you need toner but haven’t made the revenues to pay the entire delivery bill.

  1. Vendor Discounts are are usually provided through the places that you will frequent most in your profession. An example is a home improvement store discount for professionals in an electrician’s organization.
  2. Buy in bulk. Some associations also come with a discounted membership to wholesale retailers like Costco and Sam’s Club. These stores are great places to restock when you can’t afford to go to your regular vendor.
  3. Universal benefits like hotels and car rental discounts are another perk. Save on that next business trip or conference by using your association membership discounts.
  4. Group benefits are another way that professional association discounts can save you money. Yes, this includes insurance—health, auto, life, etc. For a small business owner, this is a must because individual policies are often much too expensive.
  5. Discover the participating vendors by looking at your organization’s website.

Three Ways to Get Free Advertising

Professional organizations have monthly newsletters that keep members updated on their professions and fellow members. This periodic report is also used to showcase the businesses of members, especially those doing something unique in that particular industry. The result is free advertising for the lucky business.

Actually, it isn’t luck at all. The information gathered by the newsletter comes from news reports and word of mouth news as well. Here are some ways to get your business in the “news”.

  1. Just write simple letter to the association telling about your new marketing strategy or successful cost cutting or even an anniversary.
  2. If you are on MySpace or Facebook, add the association as a friend and send out bulletins when you have news. This is another way that the association gathers news for the newsletter.
  3. You can also write an article of your own, touting your business throughout of course. This may also net you some extra cash as some newsletters pay for articles.

Using that professional association membership to save money is just one of many ways to take resources and turn them into benefits and opportunities.
