Cutting Clutter on the Way to Business Success

cluttered_desk

Small business owners and job seekers are both looking for an income source. Fortunately, some of the tips meant for businesses fueled by profits can be used for individuals seeking work. One of those tips is decluttering. Outside of household spring-cleaning, de-cluttering can also do wonders to ads, websites, and even resumes. There are ways to spot the things that you should cut in order to find success.

Resumes

Tailor the resume to the job you are trying to get at the time. Cut the clutter in the resume, which includes the information about unrelated jobs, accomplishments, and references. For example, when applying for a job at a bakery, your work history in retail may be relevant to your skills as a cashier and in customer service. However, the detailed information on your stint as data entry clerk can be left out.

  • Purge your list of family and friends who cannot attest to your work experience or skill.
  • Cut the needless inflation of your job experience.
  • Provide only the skills and objectives that talk more about your ability to exaggerate than your asset on the job.

A rule of thumb for resumes is to keep them to one page for unskilled and general labor jobs.

Websites

A customer cannot and will not patronize a site that is too complex. Many businesses try so hard to get the information out to their customers that they end up creating a site that is too cluttered to navigate. Fortunately, it is not hard to simplify.

  • Condense your navigation buttons and give them general titles. Too many buttons can turn the page into a maze. Condense the information into buttons that are titled to cover all of the information on them. Use titles like “Services,” “Rates,” or “Amenities.”
  • Place information on .pdf files or temporary pages that can be accessed on these newly condensed pages. Entitle the links so that the view can choose the information they need.
  • Create an area that is for special notices, news or updates. Customers know to look at this area for new information. This will cut down on the banners, flashing images and other things that business owners tend to use to draw attention to certain information.
  • Update the site regularly, removing outdated information.
  • Seek feedback from users on navigability and use it!

Ads

Some of the best and most effective ads out there are simple. De-clutter your ads without losing their effectiveness.

  • Plan your message. Know what you want to say before creating the ad in order to use your graphics and words efficiently.
  • Use images to help the words. Some ads get to be too wordy. Pick images that help convey your message.
  • Leverage your brand. Sometimes, the logo and a trusted slogan are all it takes to alert customers to your business.

This spring and summer, strike out on the road to success without the clutter that can prevent employers and customers from seeing what you or your business is really about.

Finding Work in Michiana: Think Seasonal

487The scenic Michiana beaches, parks and public landmarks are opening for the summer season. This means many positions in park maintenance, housekeeping, concessions, hosting and even retail positions will be opening. In addition to these, look for some unexpected jobs that many Indiana and Michigan area cities and counties need to fill for the summer season.

10 Seasonal Jobs to Pass the Summer in Michiana

    1. Waterpark Lifeguard

Deep River Water in Lake County Indiana has opened applications for summer workers they will need concession workers, cashiers and maintenance. In addition, there are lifeguards positions. These trained attendants overlook the different activities, protecting the people using them.

    2. Golf Pro/Instructor

Michigan and Indiana have many municipal golf courses. These courses staff the usual seasonal employees, and also the golf pros, caddies and instructors that private courses employ. Although some of these positions may be competitive, try taking a regular position in the pro shop and concession stand. When a position opens during the season, you will be familiar enough with the people and the facility to have an edge over the competition.

    3. Zoo Keeper

The cities and counties in which they are located own the few zoos in the area. If you are an animal lover, apply for work as a hand or keeper in the zoo.  There are also seasonal positions in the gift shop, concessions and housekeeping.

    4. Dockworker

The municipal marinas in Michigan City, New Buffalo, Hammond, Gary, and other lakeside towns come alive after Memorial Day. They look for people with welding, heavy equipment, machine and forklift experience. In addition, anyone with experience in fishing, boating and jet skiing can find work here. These jobs are more specialized and do tend to pay more than the average seasonal position.

    5. Guide

    gggg

Michigan has the largest number of lighthouses in the Midwest. Most are historical sites open to the public. They are staffed by volunteers and  also historians who work as paid guides. The battlegrounds, mansions, museums and other attractions also hire seasonal workers to guide visitors. Some experience local history will give you an edge on the competition but isn’t necessary.

Cut the Fat, Feed the Pig

348608_2617It’s time to spend smarter. Although the American economy is waking up, numerous statistics from the past few years are showing that Americans are losing control of their finances. Personal debt is piling up at an alarming rate, which proves that it’s time to refocus our spending habits, as both individuals and businesses. Putting this philosophy into action will propel our economy to healthy and stable levels.

Campaigns

According to the American Institute of Public Accountants (AIPA), Americans spent more than they earned in 2009. That hasn’t happened since the Great Depression! As a result, numerous campaigns and organizations are stepping up to remind us that saving money now, will pay off later.

Feed The Pig

The AIPA and Advertising Council are teaming up on a project called Feed the Pig. Along with a radio and TV campaign, the project is backed by a robust digital presence focused on interaction and user involvement. The applications help map out your spending and provide a budget for your household or business. Saving a little will go a long way and this site shows you the results.

Banks Promote Saving5-3rdBank

Fifth Third Bank has launched an ad campaign with the slogan, “The Things We Do For Dreams”. A series of commercials focuses on the different ways people of differing backgrounds save money each day. It’s a genius campaign, offering simple, actionable strategies to control personal spending in the spirit of planning you’re your dreams whether that be the purchase of a house, providing for your future family, or leasing a new car.

Energy Star Tax Credits

Even the government is helping us spend smarter. The Energy Star program is perfect for businesses or families looking to save money over a long period of time. By replacing your clunky water-heaters or furnaces, you may qualify for cost cutting federal rebates of up to $1,500. Not only can you receive credits for these appliances, but you’ll save money over time as well due to the efficiencies these new technologies bring. As the Energy Star website points out,

ENERGY STAR distinguishes energy efficient products which, although they may cost more to purchase than standard models, will pay you back in lower energy bills within a reasonable amount of time, without a tax credit.”

ShowImage-1You can find plenty of Energy Star appliances at Brunke Geiger Heating and Cooling of Baroda, Michigan. This Lennox Dealer ships all over the Michiana area, as well as nationally.

Time to Act

I know, I know, first I was saying “Save, save, save” and now I’m going on about spending money on appliances. A little contradictory, yes, but the point is, it’s time to think about every purchase we make for business or personal reasons. If we plan ahead and spend smarter, we can improve our future.

Although the experts keep rattling off troubling and disparaging stats, there’s no need to panic. There are plenty of ways to spend smarter and plan a budget.

Getting Accurate Unemployment Information

job-hunt-1

The Unemployment debate is fit for a straight jacket. Each day brings more news of flip flopping benefits for the unemployed.  With all of the crazy things that have been going on in the past month, and those that will be going on over the next few months, you are probably wondering where you can get the most accurate unemployment information possible.

Don’t believe the rumors that your neighbor may be telling you, or the hearsay you heard while you were in line at the grocery store. Most information that you hear in manners such as these are usually a product of the rumor mill and carries plenty of inaccurate information that can result in misguided decision making.

Go Where the Pros Go

The most accurate unemployment information can be found through your local unemployment office. You can either stop by and talk to them in person, or even call them on the phone. Don’t rule out the possibility of finding the information that you need or want to know through visiting their website or even the state unemployment program’s website.

Here are some Unemployment Websites in our area:

  • Illinois Unemployment Office
  • Indiana Unemployment Office
  • Michigan Unemployment Office

job-hunt

Yes, at this point in time there is a possibility the Federal government will no longer be providing unemployment benefits past a certain date in March to many unemployed citizens. And, if you are continuing to receive payments, they will soon be stopped as well.  However, there are other legislative debates occurring that may extend these benefits. If we are going to see anything about whether the many United States citizens are going to be able to continue receiving unemployment extended benefits, it will be in the next few days or in the next couple of weeks.

In a current state of financial crisis that the American society is facing, unemployment benefits and other unemployment information is important to the future of many families.

Jobs are scarce. If you are are trying your darndest to find work, but can’t seem to find any employment, make sure you consult your local Unemployment Office.

Thoughts on the Unemployment Benefits Extension

jobhuntIf you have been keeping tabs on the news lately, then you already know that the extension of unemployment benefits is a very “hot topic”.  With thousands of unemployed Americans due to run out of benefits in just a few short weeks, many are upset as there are still no jobs available, so where will they go from here?  Will they simply fall out of the system?

An Extension by Any Other Name?

Is the new unemployment benefits extension actually an extension?  Well, many citizens who are living off of unemployment benefits because of the down economy believe that it isn’t.  Those who are on their final tier through the unemployment benefits system are due to run out soon and the new extension doesn’t address this issue.  So far, this issue hasn’t been addressed and Congress needs to hurry if they do plan to address this issue.

The previous 30 day extension really didn’t do much for the consumers besides provide them with money to pay daily living expenses.  Thirty days may be a reasonable amount of time for some to find work, but thousands of unemployed Americans are still not back to work.

Running Into a Wall

Many of the unemployed citizens are actively trying to seek jobs; however, jobs are few and far between.  When they do find one that they are qualified for, there are a thousand other applicants who are applying for the same job.  It will take American time to crawl out of the current recession and until we do so, unemployment benefits should continue through an unemployment benefits extension that is truly designed to help out the deserving, hard working citizens who have found themselves without a job during this recession.

Officials on Parade

Here lately, with each passing day, more information is becoming available on this subject.  To stay on top of the proposed changes and the moves that are being made by the government, you can always contact your local unemployment office and ask any questions that you may have.  Recently, our home area of Michiana was visited by Governor Mitch Daniels as he makes his way across Indiana to discuss the economy with his citizens. Many government officials are making similar trips in order to reassure their communities that the country is responding to employment crises as soon as possible. We all should listen to their statements and make change wherever possible.
